History[edit]
In 1971, Warren Eisenberg and Leonard Feinstein opened a store in Springfield, New Jersey called Bed 'n Bath. By 1985, Eisenberg and Feinstein were operating 17 stores in the New York metropolitan area and California. Also in 1985, the first superstore was opened, as an attempt to remain competitive with Linens 'n Things, Pacific Linen, and Luxury Linens. In order to properly represent the size increase in its retail stores, the company changed its name to Bed Bath & Beyond in 1987. The company adopted integrated computer-based inventory management systems in 1993 to better compete with Linens ‘n Things, which had utilized computer inventory management since the late 1980s.[6]
The company went public in June 1992, making its IPO on the NASDAQ stock exchange, where its stock continues to trade under ticker symbol BBBY.[7] Bed Bath & Beyond first reached $1 billion in annual sales in 1999.[6]
In March 2019, three activist investment firms -- Legion Partners, Marcellum Advisors, and Ancora Advisors — announced their intent to remove current CEO Steven Temares and restructure Bed Bath & Beyond’s current board of directors.[8] The activist investors highlighted several instances of perceived nepotism, including the acquisition of Buybuy Baby, which was founded by two of Bed Bath & Beyond co-founder Leonard Feinstein’s children, and the acquisition of Chef Central, which was created by co-founder Warren Eisenberg’s son, as examples of poor business practices at Bed Bath & Beyond.[9] This pressure led five independent directors to step down on April 22, 2019, and also resulted in the company restructuring its board to include only 10 directors instead of the previous 12 members.[10]
On April 13, 2019 there was a report that the chain will close 40 stores but open 15 new locations.[3]
On May 13, 2019, Bed Bath & Beyond announced that CEO Steven Temares would step down “effectively immediately” and would resign his seat on the board of directors. Mary Winston, who had been appointed to the company’s board as a result of the activist investment firms’ efforts, replaced Temares as interim CEO.[11][12] On November 4, 2019, Mark Tritton, who was previously Target's chief merchandising officer, started as Bed Bath & Beyond's CEO.[13]
The company, which has for decades used coupon mailers and other promotional discounting tactics to attract consumers, also announced in April that it would reduce its use of promotional coupons and tighten restrictions on their use. To combat declining profitability, Bed Bath & Beyond is also creating private-label brands and opening “lab stores” that focus on home decor, food and drink, and health and beauty products.[14]
Bed Bath & Beyond currently operates approximately 1,530 stores in all 50 U.S. states, as well as in the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and Canada. In addition to more than 1,020 Bed Bath & Beyond stores, the company also operates approximately 280 Cost Plus World Markets, 100 Buybuy Baby stores, roughly 80 Christmas Tree Shops (and related brands), and more than 50 Harmon stores.[15]
The company is expected to close up to 60 stores around the United States in early 2020.[16]
Competition[edit]
Since the liquidation of Linens N Things in 2008, Bed Bath and Beyond has several major retail competitors, including Walmart, Target, and JCPenney, as well as several mid-sized competitors like Pier 1 Imports. Companies such as Crate & Barrel, IKEA, and the numerous Williams-Sonoma companies like Pottery Barn and West Elm are competitors as well.[citation needed]

If there’s one rule to shopping at Bed, Bath & Beyond, it’s this: Never head to the checkout without a coupon in hand. The home furnishings chain is famous for its 20% off coupons, which arrive in mailboxes like clockwork.
In fact, shoppers have become so addicted to the generous coupons that their use is cutting into company profits. That’s prompted rumors that the chain will eliminate coupons. For now, there’s no sign of that happening, and as long as the coupons keep showing up, people will keep using them. But just stashing that coupon in your bag before you head to the store isn’t the only way to save at Bed, Bath & Beyond. These are the Bed, Bath & Beyond shopping tricks and coupon secrets you need to know.
1. It’s ridiculously easy to get coupons

If you’re the kind of person who regularly recycles your junk mail, you might find yourself facing a Bed Bath & Beyond shopping trip with a wallet empty of coupons. Don’t despair. You’ll get a 20% off coupon when you sign up for the store’s emails, and another if you register to receive texts. And if you’re not getting coupons in the mail, you can sign up to receive those too.
Once you’re on Bed, Bath & Beyond’s list, you should get a regular stream of coupons in your inbox or mailbox.
2. The coupons don’t really expire
This one isn’t much of a secret at this point, but we’re including it just in case you haven’t heart. Bed, Bath & Beyond coupons do have a printed expiration date, but chances are a cashier will accept your coupon no matter what date is printed on it. So, rather than tossing those expired coupons in the trash, save them for a future shopping trip.
3. Know when to use which coupons
In addition to 20% off coupons, Bed, Bath & Beyond also regularly sends out coupons for $5 off of $15 or $10 off of $30. If you have both coupons, you’ll need to do a little math to figure out how to get the best deal. For purchases of $25 or less but more than $15, use the $5 off coupon; otherwise use the 20% coupon. If you have a $10 off coupon, use it for purchases of $50 or less but more than $30. Otherwise, go for the 20% coupon.
4. You can buy the coupons online

It might seem counterintuitive to pay money to save money, but some people don’t think so. There’s a brisk online trade in Bed, Bath & Beyond coupons at sites like eBay, due in part to the loose expiration date policy. For coupon-less shoppers in the market for a big-ticket item, spending a few bucks to get 20% off could be a smart move.
5. You can use more than one coupon per purchase
Most Bed, Bath & Beyond coupons are for 20% off one item. According to the Krazy Koupon Lady, you should be able to use multiple 20% off coupons in one transaction, allowing you to save on more than one item.
6. Keep an eye out for 20% off your entire purchase coupons
You can avoid the hassle of bringing multiple coupons to the store if you get your hands on a valuable 20% off your entire purchase coupon. One might arrive in your mailbox as part of your change of address packet when you move. Or, you can sign up to receive moving tips from Bed, Bath & Beyond and get the extra-generous discount.
7. Read the fine print
Bed, Bath & Beyond has a generous coupon policy, but you do need to read the fine print. Some brands are excluded, including Dyson, Kate Spade, Instant Pot, Vera Wang, and Waterford.
8. The membership program might not be worth it
Last year, Bed, Bath & Beyond rolled out Beyond+ a $29 yearly membership program. For that, you get free shipping as well as 20% off every purchase you make. That could be worth it if you’re a frequent Bed, Bath & Beyond shopper, but if you only shop at the store occasionally and are smart about using coupons, you probably won’t save – especially since the chain already offers free shipping for orders over $39.
9. You can wrap your gifts for free
If you’re shopping in store for a gift, don’t ignore the gift wrapping table. The store provides boxes, wrapping paper, ribbons, scissors, and tape so you can get your gift looking pretty. (If you buy online, you still have to pay for gift packaging.)
